Don't Send Emails Like This, part 2

So here are some things you should NOT be doing when it comes to email marketing, eblasts, ezines, sending e-newsletters, solo emails, following up via email, etc.



  • Sending group or bulk emails via your Outlook, yahoo, aol, hotmail, comcast or similar email inbox. Because of many reasons but most of all deliverability, spam laws and tracking issues.
  • Sending text emails with a link to view your recent email newsletter, newsletter online or video message and nothing else is in that email but a "Click on this link to view message and your name" because they won't click.
  • Sending eblasts or ezines without pictures, clipart or visuals. Which you can't do effectively in the above email programs anyway.
  • Sending emails with a BORING or non-existent subject line because this is why people will click to open!
  • Sending emails without your picture of identification and personalization in them.
    Adding people to email newsletters or ezines WITHOUT their permission! Huge email no-no.
  • Not identifying where or how you met people when you first follow up; they will not remember you!
  • Not giving your subscribers enough valuable content - they will unsubscribe if you try to just sell them!
  • Using canned or corporate eblasts or ezines because they are 'easier'. They are not as effective however for building relationships which is what you need to be doing!

Don't Send Emails Like This, part 1

I'm going to jump right in and get blunt here.


I don't have time to sugar-coat this information because frankly --- It's costing you and your business numerous sales every day! Pay attention!


First of all, if YOU'RE NOT doing any regular, consistent email marketing like ezines, announcements, etc. then 'what are you thinking'? This is a must for anyone's follow up system! (Of course it's not the only thing you should be doing but it needs to be a part of your overall system)


I don't care if you like to receive emails, ezines or eblasts yourself - YOU SHOULD NEVER BASE YOUR MARKETING AND BUSINESS DECISIONS ON WHAT YOU LIKE OR DON'T LIKE! (Stop doing this!)

Secondly, if you are doing some sort of ezine or eblasts then good for you; at least you're getting something out there to remind your customers, prospects and contacts that you're there and ready for their business or referrals.

However, if you are NOT sending these emails by now through an online email marketing service/program then shame on you! You know there are Spam Laws out there right that you need to be following? Not only so you don't get reported and halted from sending any more emails from your provider but also so you don't develop a 'reputation' for spamming by the people in your circle (or outside your circle if you happen to be cold-call eblasting; this is BAD); you can blackball yourself you know???

Is This Online Information Marketing Business Model Right For You? - Step 8

Now is NOT the time to sit around in your business holding on to your wallets and sitting frozen on what to do next. It's time to develop new streams of revenue, find new ways for your current customers to buy more and look at possibly targeting a different market as well - ones that HAVE money to spend.

In these series of articles I'm writing, I want to specifically talk about the 8 Steps to Starting Your Own Online Information Marketing Business. Because this is by far one of the only types of businesses out there that is still generating millions of dollars and doing it via the internet (so you can make more and spend less time).

Step 8 is What's Next?

This is simple, you have to test, track and tweak everything you're doing! How else can you make adjustments to what's working or what isn't if you have NO IDEA?
This also includes thinking bigger, thinking ahead to the bigger picture and what else is possible for you and your business? Often times we need a coach to help guide us through this process too because you don't know what you don't know and if you aren't out there being exposed to what else is possible on a regular basis, it might be very hard for you to think up the REAL BIG IDEAS AND VISIONS for that multi-million dollar business for example....that's waiting for you.....

Is This Online Information Marketing Business Model Right For You? - Step 7

Now is NOT the time to sit around in your business holding on to your wallets and sitting frozen on what to do next. It's time to develop new streams of revenue, find new ways for your current customers to buy more and look at possibly targeting a different market as well - ones that HAVE money to spend.

In these series of articles I'm writing, I want to specifically talk about the 8 Steps to Starting Your Own Online Information Marketing Business. Because this is by far one of the only types of businesses out there that is still generating millions of dollars and doing it via the internet (so you can make more and spend less time).

Step 7 is Ongoing Marketing.

In step 6 I went into great detail on the 3 different categories or types of marketing as I like to explain them:
1. Database Marketing
2. Referral Source Marketing
3. New Business Marketing

The reason I break it down like this is because most small business owners focus most of their efforts in only one area, going after new business, and they forget or choose not to do much to market to their databases or referral sources which are the easiest to go after!

Therefore, the ongoing marketing is when you continually mail, email, visit or call to everyone on your list. It's fine to have an ezine (email newsletter) but you have to have MORE than that. Not everyone is going to open or read your ezine every week/month so you have to do other things.

I recommend writing up a simple Annual Marketing Calendar to include the following marketing practices:

  • When to send out ezines
  • When to send out solo email promotions
  • When to launch new products or services or events and what to do when for that
  • What to mail to your list or segments of your list and when - monthly, quarterly?
  • What holidays to send fun things in the mail and/or email
  • Where and how often to speak to groups
  • What and when to send promotions to your affiliates
  • How often to post on your blog or update and visit your social networking sites
  • When and where to network in person

You get the idea. Are you doing this? And then are you delegating some of these tasks to a team member? If not, you're missing out on a TON OF REVENUE!

This is the kind of stuff that we work on 1on1 in coaching sessions. You need to lay out your marketing plans for the entire year otherwise months will flash by and you won't have done a thing! Sound familiar?

Don't Give a Discount!, part 2

What can your Free Gift With Purchase (or Bonus) be?
The key is NOT to make it something that costs you a lot more money or more of your time - that would not be smart marketing.

You want to give something easy, free and/or low cost to give. If the Bonus can be given automatically - even better! Meaning, can you send it via email or set it up to go out automatically from your website, shopping cart or email program automatically when they buy using a link and a digital file?

This won't take any of your time at all then and will add lots of value depending on the content, right? And it costs nothing!

Your Bonus could be:

  • Your advice - in a report, ebook, audio recording, CD or book
  • A friend or peer's advice - in a similar format (something that's complimentary to what they're buying, meaning it makes sense they'd want it)
  • Your favorite book - so you go buy a bunch in bulk and give them out, more than likely the added revenues will outweigh the expense.
  • A free product
  • A free coaching session or consultation - but be careful about giving too much time! (Usually however, people don't use these as weird as that sounds)
  • A checklist, quiz, action guide, article tip sheet, interview, etc.
  • Get creative but make sure to not cost yourself a lot more 'TIME' or it's not worth it.

Don't Give a Discount!, part 1


Read on and I'll tell you why....

This is actually a very good lesson I learned from one of my mentors, Ali Brown in the last couple years and it works!

You can get just as much business or response from a promotion if you give a 'BONUS' rather than a DISCOUNT (and you don't have to lose any money!).

It's simple really, people want a good deal yes of course but we immediately think that has to be a lesser price or discounted price on our products or services when really, if you can just add a lot more value to the package instead, it's even better because people realize they're getting more for their money.

Think about it: Free Gift With Purchase (how much do you love it when you get something free with something else you already wanted to buy?!?!)

You don't want to be known as 'The Low Price Leader' do you? Or the person who always sends out coupons or discounts so your customers wait until they get another one from you before they come back and shop again??

My background is in newspaper advertising so of course I had a mindset that you had to give a price discount back then too. I thought you had to give a coupon so that #1 you could track who came in from your ad and #2 so you could get ample response. And yes, that worked too but for us Entrepreneurs, it's a whole different ballgame; we don't want to do couponing - do you? I don't.

Sure, every once in a while I run a sale or give a deal on a product or service but it's not geared specifically to get business because that's the only way I can get it. Usually I do those things 'for fun' or when I launch something new to get a good head start on sales. I like to see the rush of orders in my inbox when I send out an email with a special promotion.

Kat's Recent Play Time

Ok, so I've been lagging on posting some things about my personal life on my blog and I want to update you on some fun stuff I've been doing!

So, in February, my boyfriend Scott and I took a pre-Valentine's Day mini-vacation in Bodega Bay where we enjoyed the ocean, great clam chowder, roaring fires, massages and fun, steamy bubble baths! Can I get a whoo hoo! While we were there, one of my dear friends and clients Ankya Klay came out to give us one of her 'Transformational Photography Sessions'. Here is a couple pictures she shot, see the rest on my facebook.


































In March, I attended one of my mentors, David Neagle's Experience the Reality of Success event in Vegas again for the 3rd time. Yes, it's THAT GOOD. Scott actually came with me even though he doesn't own his own business. He wanted to see more about what I did, who I interacted with and what manifesting and your life purpose was all about! Little did he know that he would learn sooooo much about his own purpose, his own desires and we came home such a huge ball of love and support for one another, it was fabulous. Here's a pic of us and others including Ivanka Trump at ERS!




















In April, I attended my good friend Fabienne Fredrickson's Marketing and Mindset Breakthroughs Workshop in LA. I went to support Fabienne as we were mastermind buddies when we coached with David last year and I got so many great ideas for my own event this coming November plus a few key things to introduce in my business too! Here's a pic of me at the Ritz!



Then immediately following Fabienne's event, Scott came down to join me and we were off to Disneyland! One of Scott's daughters was dancing in the parade and on stage at Disneyland and Ca Adventure that weekend so we went to watch and support her - boy did we overdo it! We were exhausted after 3 days of Mickey and the gang! Here's a couple cute pics we took!

Are You Ready to Uplevel Yourself?

Yes, it's time....to uplevel myself again!!

As entrepreneurs we constantly have to be evolving, changing and even upleveling ourselves to the next phase of our business and our life's journey.

I keep telling you that. I tell my clients that. I truly live what I preach and walk what I talk; this is important in a coach that's going to teach you....that they also get their own coaching too! It's no secret, it's reality. Some of us fabulous marketers need someone to find the holes and opportunities in our businesses too! (Kelly has coaches too in fact!)

I'm excited and anxious to take my business to the next level yet again....it's funny though how you just can't plan for this stuff ya know?

It just happens. You wake up in the middle of the night with a whole new idea or focus for yourself and that's what happened to me.

I realized that I needed to be teaching more than just business and marketing strategies and techniques to entrepreneurs which is what I've been doing in my business for over six and a half years.

It was also about LOVE.

Business Advice from Church

Often times I go to church and the pastor says the ONE thing I needed to hear that week.

Does that ever happen to you?


Well a week ago the pastor at my church was talking about Doubt.


Obviously he was talking about doubting your belief in God and how to keep the faith but I took away some nuggets I thought I'd share with you. They can apply to your business too because you have to have complete faith in yourself and your business or it won't survive right?


But many of us do get caught up in self-doubt or doubt in general sometimes, I know, I do too. It's not easy when you work from home alone and no one to talk to but my dog Zeke all day.

I do try to call my optimistic, big thinking friends though if it really creeps in so I don't allow it to stick around...because that's deadly.


So, here are 7 Observations about Doubt that my pastor shared:

  1. Doubt-free living is impossible.
  2. The roots of doubt are more complex than assumed.
  3. Every human being lives by faith

  • If you don't have any doubts you are either kidding yourself or asleep. Doubts are the ants in the pants of faith. They keep it awake and moving.
  • The Christian faith is bi-polar. Disciples live their life between worship and doubt, trusting and questioning, hoping and worrying.
Now whether you're religious or spiritual or not this can still apply to your life and business.


I know I talk all the time to my clients about keeping their faith and confidence up. You have to believe in yourself, what you're teaching, what you're charging, what you're worth, where you want to go and why you want to make what you want to make in order to get these things and live a truly happy life in my opinion.


So, think about it next time you begin to doubt yourself, think why you're doing that?

"Is This Online Information Marketing Business Model Right For You? - Step 6"

Now is NOT the time to sit around in your business holding on to your wallets and sitting frozen on what to do next. It's time to develop new streams of revenue, find new ways for your current customers to buy more and look at possibly targeting a different market as well - ones that HAVE money to spend.

In these series of articles I'm writing, I want to specifically talk about the 8 Steps to Starting Your Own Online Information Marketing Business. Because this is by far one of the only types of businesses out there that is still generating millions of dollars and doing it via the internet (so you can make more and spend less time).

Ok so step 6 is to Hit the Ground Running!!

You guessed it, finally the marketing part of this whole equation.

So where do you start?

What do you do?

Well, I like to start with 'free first, then pay' options...how does that sound to you?

I usually recommend marketing options based on 3 different categories or types of marketing, they are:
1. Database Marketing
2. Referral Source Marketing
3. New Business Marketing

The reason I break it down like this is because most small business owners focus most of their efforts in only one area, going after new business, and they forget or choose not to do much to market to their databases or referral sources which are the easiest to go after! (Let me explain each and some examples for you.)

Your Database Marketing is marketing to everyone and anyone you know....regardless of your relationship. This includes your hair dresser, dentist, neighbors and friends. More than likely everyone you know could be a potential prospect or referral source (but we'll talk about referral sources separately for this example).

Database Marketing needs to be done via email, mail, phone, visits and fax if you can - the more ways the better! The goal is to be on top of mind with everyone you know (and those you add to your DB too) all the time so if they or someone they know needs your products or services, you are the first person they think of.Database Marketing can be:

Sending out bi-weekly or weekly ezines (monthly don't work)
Holding regular teleclasses or events they can attend
Mailings to them often and consistently
Reminder phone calls and follow up calls
Networking or speaking at events where they can attend

Your Referral Source Marketing is marketing to all those individuals, companies or groups that directly target your target market. They are comprable businesses to yours or big fans of yours that will be most likely to refer business to you. You want to go through your database and build a big list of these people, companies or groups that you can market to.

You may even want to do a search via industry to find or connect with more individuals or companies to add to that list and market to.The marketing messages that you'll send to Referral Sources will be slightly different than the ones you send to your regular database of prospects and contacts and a lot different than the ones you send to new businesses.

Referral Source Marketing can be any or all of the above plus:

  • Invite referral sources to be guest on your teleclasses or speak at your events (and offer to do the same for them)
  • Invite referral sources to use your articles or information in their ezines or websites (and offer to do the same)
  • Build an automated online referral program (typically called an Affiliate Program - I have one, check it out online!)
  • Send referral sources prewritten email or web copy or mailed materials they can send out to promote your products, services, events or classes (making sure you have a tracking system in place of course)

Your New Business Marketing will consist more of direct marketing to a targeted list of prospects. You can buy a list if you want so you can do a mailing but make sure you're very clear on the demographics and psychographics of your prospects in order to narrow the list down.

In addition to mailings for New Business Marketing here are a bunch of other ways to reach potential prospects, here are a few:

  • Social networking is one of the most popular these days - there are hundreds of sites and places to find prospects online but you can get sucked in and spend a ton of time so watch out!
  • Finding blogs and forums online where your target market congregates and post on them often; answering and asking questions.
  • Speak at events where your target market attends
  • Run ads or give articles to people who send out ezines to their lists who are also your target market

Most of all however, for all types of marketing, the goal should be to get them into your mailing and email database so that you can continue to market to them. You've got to build relationships with them over time; that's the most effective way to market to anyone. People will do business with people they like, trust and connect with so make it easy for them to do business with you and refer their friends to you too!
